In this review we introduce and compare main theoretical approaches that have investigated the bereavement phenomenon and its outcomes. The early contributions on bereavement study came from psychodynamic model only. In the recent years, researchers from different approaches have enriched and integrated traditional conceptualizations also opening a discussion on many subjects. At the present time no theoretical paradigm is considered prevailing. However the increase of literature contributions and empirical studies have provided basis to best comprehend normal and pathological responses after a mournful event and are indicative of the subject relevance, still "alive" at the distance of 100 years almost from the first fundamental contributions on bereavement field.
