This article describes a peculiar kind of boundary: the barrage that existed between 1966 and the beginning of the 1980s around the city of Djibuti. Its official goal was to restrain immigration, but in the same period the city’s population probably tripled. After situating this episode in the larger history of French colonization in the Horn of Africa, the article describes the condition for the realization of this imposing infrastructure. The article then addresses the system of military, political and ideological control within which the barrage operated through the analysis of unpublished French military and administrative sources. Finally, the article questions the role of the barrage in the production of identity in the colonial and post-colonial era.
