The profile of new types of psychiatric patients at risk of antisocial behaviour takes into account the modern epidemiology of mental disorders and the research findings on the psychopathology of violent behaviour. The advances in Italian law - that have significantly altered the theory of non-imputability and the existing conditions of security measures - have also brought about new organisational needs and developed specific psychiatric expertise in the mental health services. The Author describes a new profile for forensic psychiatric patients based on a multiple approach built on epidemiology, clinical medicine and law. These different fields of study should be considered systemically in order to define their points of contact and build concrete service and professional proposals.
