Compulsive buying disorder is characterized by excessive shopping cognitions and buying behavior that leads to distress more or less serious, depending on the severity. Community based and clinical surveys suggest that 80% to 95% of persons with compulsive buying disorder are women. The reported gender difference could be artifacts: women readily declare that they have a problem with shopping and men are underrepresented in samples. However, some authors suggest that the gender difference is real and it is linked to specific psychosocial factors. From these considerations, this article presents data from a study designed to investigate the relationship between unregulated buying and gender difference.
