Recently the literature has focused on business networks (and business-networking) as an emerging phenomenon halfway between the great vertically integrated company and the Marshallian industrial district. The purpose of the article is to first investigate the mechanisms that guard the formation of these networks (relevant actors, the role of policies and institutions) on the base of two case studies. Secondly, attention will focus on local collective competition goods created by these aggregations and the role played in their production by actors and institutions at local level. The goal is to understand which local collective competition goods are necessary for the reorganization of the economy on a local level and whether - and how - the local institutions successfully contribute to their production.

Keywords: Business networks, districts, medium size enterprises, actors, policies, collective goods
