In recent years the historiographic debate on the second post-world war period has privileged efforts to go beyond national narratives, questioning the traditional borders of the respective scholarly branches. The political experience of Amintore Fanfani offers a significant case study, at the crossing of foreign policy with the choices characterizing different stages of the story of republican Italy. This essay examines some key issues accompanying and re-defining the international scenery, with special regard to the guidelines and conditionings of the bipolar system. The leading role of Fanfani in the Christian Democrat Party no less than in the cabinets as premier or minister of foreign affairs is here the thread that allows us to understand the evolution of the interrelationships between the internal scene and the international context. The history of the Republic becomes a part of a wider process characterizing a long second post-war phase, to such a point that the very axes of the international projection of republican Italy appear to be modified.
