The Author underlines the innovative changes introduced by Enrico Morselli in the field of Italian psychiatry, during the first half of the 20th century. Italian psychiatry is then based on a positivist culture and is alien to the influences of phenomenological psychiatry and psychoanalysis. The Author describes Morselli’s scientific development and comments his fundamental work, written in 1930, on the lady patient Elena. Morselli’s study opens the psychiatric field to the understanding of psychotic experiences, emphasizing the possibility of treating a patient using dialogue and listening.
