This note offers a commentary to the G. Avallone’s book "La sociologia urbana e rurale. Origini e sviluppi in Italia". Reflecting on the evolution of the sociological studies on urban and rural societies in Italy, the text shortly highlights some fundamental challenges they have to face in the future, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view, in order to improve the capacity of comprehension of social phenomena and to demonstrate their social relevance.
