The author discusses how Bühler’s theory of sign was influenced by the phenomenological movement - and especially by Husserl - both on the theoretical and on the methodological level. First, Bühler adopts a phenomenological approach as opposed to a genetic one. Second, he reinterprets the Husserlian notion of a "meaning conferring act" as a "language act". Finally, the author argues that the Husserlian distinction between objective meanings and essentially subjective meanings is crucial for the understanding of Bühler’s notions of indexical and symbolic signs.
