The traditional conception of the Left and of social criticism as aiming at the overthrowing of economic and social system is based on four presuppositions: 1) private property is the root of social domination; 2) it is possible to think of a property regime and an economic organization different from capitalism, but acceptable in terms of fairness and efficiency; 3) the existing social order contains in itself the social forces which will overthrow it; 4) the change towards the new social order can be accomplished with political action. The essay tries to prove that these four conditions don’t obtain and that, if political Left is ready to accept these conditions, it can think of its own political action as the real change of existing social relations, rather as their overthrowing.
