The thoughts of various authors and research in the fields of psychology, neurobiology and philosophy from the last decades of the twentieth century to the present have consented, in a continually more positive way, the overcoming of the long-standing dualism between mind and body. This pertains as well to the cartesian distinction between res cogitans and res extensa, between the science of the spirit and the science of nature, considering the man-environment interaction as the foundation and development of mental functions which, in a phenomenological prospective, even resolves the antithesis between nurture and nature. The mind of man, as expression of his original opening to the world, through a process of self-organization (Edgar Morin) structures its own modalities of relating with the existential environment, while the lived experience determines the development and organization of the neurobiological aspects that are genetically predisposed (neuronal Darwinism of Gerald Edelman, embodiment of Francisco Varela). The author brings some recent acquisitions of the neurosciences regarding the neuroplasticity of the neuronal systems which confirm the intimately relational structure of the human mind.
