The Italian Federation of Communist Youth (Federazione giovanile comunista italiana, FGCI) acted as an important means for the conquest of youth consensus to the communist political line in the second post-war period, much likely what happened with all the youth organizations of the other mass parties. This study analyzes the internal debate of the communist youth organization during the eventful period between 1956 and 1968, with special attention to the originality traits as regards the themes then prevailing among the "adults": not so many, indeed, in times when obedience to the official party line was seldom questioned. Predominant are the great ideological and strategic themes of "the Italian road to socialism", but there are also more specific motives of reflection on the juvenile universe concerning both the first symptoms of political self-determination of the young generations (e.g. July 1960) and the social and lifestyle changes triggered by the "economic miracle".

Keywords: Italian Federation of Communist Youth (FGCI), Italian Communist Party (PCI), "economic miracle", youth, mass parties, Italian road to socialism
