Lingering depression, nameless anguish, lack of energy and dynamism, lack or absence of personal and economic resources are often the background - and also the subject - of the demand of our patients’ call for help or renunciation of work. Subjective feelings of inability and powerlessness can be easily justified through social and economic situations and shared reality is used to explain painful or unbearable emotional responses. Faith and confidence in our therapeutic tools are constantly brought into question by those who propose settings and techniques inflected to comfortably rely on - and fit into - external events. Starting from clinical situations where the real bursts onto the therapeutic scene, the author analyzes the psychic transformations in a group of young adults during the course of a few therapeutic sessions. Just like all truly creative changes, this group and personal evolution is based on the convergence of the new and the old, on the acknowledgment of one’s roots, the acquired consciousness of one’s place among the generations, and the acquisition of an appropriate use of the depressive position.
