Emotions seem to have taken the lead in contemporary societies. They have become crucial in the private domain and are also gaining ground in the public domain. They alsoseem to underpin a sense of authenticity and truth. But all this has a cost, one that is paid primarily by the quest for truth, in the sense of "something that can at least be demonstrated with facts". By replacing historical truth with a personal perception and awareness, past history becomes a playing field for matches based on the rhetoric of excuses and pardons, becoming a fertile breeding ground where all forms of revision- ism can flourish. A valid use of emotions may nevertheless also be made in the public domain. This is exemplified by the author, who mentions the role played by the associations of relatives of massacre victims established in Italy in the eighties of the last century. The aim here is to highlight the fact that the truth is and must be an underlying criterion of the public domain and cannot be replaced by any fictional supposed reality that has been pieced together using the rhetoric of paranoia and sentimentalism.
