After a brief survey of the major evolutionary steps related to the development of Community legislation on food labelling, the Author analyzes some of the main innovation of regulation (EU) no. 1169/2011, on food information to consumers, with particular emphasis on new rules about the indication of origin of food, checking also the compatibility with the Italian legislation. The Author outlines on the relationship between origin, quality and consumer protection in the light of some decisions of the European Court of Justice and with reference to food for which there are specific rules on labelling. Finally the Author, since the gradual development of regional quality labels, focuses on using of these as instrument for the voluntary indication of origin.
