Technological progress has radically changed the relationship between man and nature. The artificiality of the interventions has brought fewer integration with the places, in addition to cases of conurbation and disurbanization. Urban expansion creates transitional areas between urban and rural districts, in which the most characteristic elements are intertwined and are transformed under the pressure of urbanization, ruralisation and naturalization, losing their identity value. The analysis proposed here identifies quantitative indicators evaluating actors operating in the urban fringe representative of a Mediterranean city providing an overview of the economic, social and environmental impacts caused by human pressure. At the same time, we evaluate the stability and transformations of the countryside’s identity, in areas where agricultural, economic, archaeological and speculative factors are intertwined in a peculiar urban-rural gradient.
