The work starts from the question: how has the presence of grandparents, over the dec-ades, changed child psychotherapy. Reflecting on clinical experience, the author notes passage from a "background" presence of the grandparents to their direct involvement in the foreground due to a particular situation of the parents of the children, or because they are trustees of survivors from a mother’s murder, or also due to the relationship with their grandchildren after the death of their own child. For the reported cases the grandparents be-came an important "bridge" that allows transits over voids, unevenness, discontinuity between growing children and parents absent or in difficulty. All this stimulates new thoughts on today grandparenting.

Keywords: Grandparents, parental function of grandparents, murdering of mothers, mourning, children
