Between the mid 1940s and the early 1960s, the neighborhood, in its multiple translations, adaptations and interpretations (‘quartiere’, ‘vicinato’ and ‘comunità’) became a recurrent reference for Italian architectural and planning culture, deeply affecting discourses and practice. The model of the ‘neighborhood unit’, codified by C. Perry during the 1920s and revised through the efforts of American professional culture during WWII, had a central role in the debate on post-war city planning, not only as tool for the reconstruction, but also as method for the design of public housing programs and projects, and tool of Italian planning during the 1960s. In the frame of a set of international references and exchanges, the paper intends to ‘map’ some of the places, occasions and biographies that contributed to vehiculate the dissemination of the concept in Italy, often generating misunderstandings and forms of resistance.
