The article proposes a reading of the work of Tullio De Mauro and focusses on the reflections that, starting from the publication of the Storia linguistica dell’Italia unita (1963), made him one of the principal figures of reference of Italian linguistic studies, De Mauro’s work often placed him at the centre of vigorous discussions, no more so than with his recent inteventions on the problem of linguistic education in the Italian school system. In particular, the article discusses the way in which De Mauro’s reading of the linguistic history of the nation, from Unification to the present day, reveals an unresolved tension betweeen elements which mark an evolution in the socio-cultural characteristics of the nation and others which, instead, seem to imply the reverse.
