The article examines the path that led to the creation of the Italian Association of Public History and to the organization of its first national conferences. It describes the process through which the discipline was established, taking into consideration some specific features of Italian historiography. Its aim is to highlight the intertwining of practices and subjects that, while moving in apparently very separate areas, found themselves aiming towards the same goal. The article then presents the "Manifesto" of Italian Public History, a document that sets out the objectives of the new association, and puts forward an initial reflection on the role it can play in the wider historical community.
