The smart city and the practice of flânerie can be considered two ways of conceiving the city on the opposites of a continuum that sees on the one hand the use of urban space in a technological and participatory key and, on the other, a series of behaviors strongly character-ized by emotional and self-referential aspects. In this article we will try to trace different as-pects of these opposites by identifying a series of conceptual couples that can help us in the process of framing these themes, aware of the defining uncertainties that accompany these dis-cussions. The conceptual pairs we will refer to are: reason vs. emotion, service vs. interstice, formal vs. informal, public vs. private, participation vs. individualism.
