From 1560 to 1570, in the young Peruvian viceroyalty, the production of inquiring and informative texts, legitimated by the experience in situ and requested by the crown, favored gradually the circulation of knowledge on the Indians and the Incas. These texts were axials, in an instrumental sense, for the crowns labor domination. The analysis is based on an enclosed documental corpus, made of letters, reports and treaties, considering that it was precisely the royal civil servants in the 16th century who linked the culture of modern empirical knowledge to domination practices and administration, this paper suggests that on the one hand the description of the Indians is backed up by criteria of inferiority and atavistic incapability and on the other hand the description of the Inca shows that viceroys, governors and letrados recommended that the Inca laws should be reinstated into the colonial regime, given that this prehispanic system not only had disciplined the Indians and given them norms, but that it also had maintained the dominated communities with best possible labor efficiency.
