Vaccination in the time of the "Arab monster" (1801-1849) The essay reconstructs the long history of the vaccination process against smallpox, implemented in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, during the first half of the nineteenth century. The fight against smallpox represented only a small piece of a wider and more complex reform program, which ranged from the reform of the tax system to that of land distribution. At the end of the 19th century, the elaboration of conclusive statistics, even if they are invalidated, causes a general chaos of the data, estimated the presence of 68 vaccinated people out of 100 born in the continental Royal Domains and only 57 out of 100 in Sicily.
