The article traces the evolution of gender roles in the women’s press in the two Germanies from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s through a comparative analysis between the women’s magazines of the Federal Republic of Germany («Brigitte», «Praline», and «Constanze») and those of the German Democratic Republic («Frau von heute» and «Für dich»). The author’s goal is twofold: to capture similarities and differences between the gender models proposed or imposed, on this side and on the other side of the Wall, and to correlate the media’s image of women (and men) with the social, legal and political status of women and the family.
