The essay aims to investigate the role played by the Italian section of the Catholic movement Pax Christi in the history of conscientious objection to military service. The turning point is identified in the presi- dency of Luigi Bettazzi, bishop of Ivrea, which took place at the end of 208 Summaries 1968: he transformed the movement into a reality attentive to the sensi- tivities of young people and the pacifist demands matured in civil society. Recognition of conscientious objection became an identifying moment in Pax Christi claims and it became a point of reference in the Catholic world. This central role would last until conscientious objection was recog- nised in 1972. With the birth of civil service, other catholic organisations would take over.
