This article aims to reconstruct the genesis, development, and outcomes of the so-called Barcelona People’s Olympiad of 1936. The event was designed to counter the Berlin games organised by the Nazis, but it did not take place because of the military coup of July 1936, the event which sparked the Spanish Civil War. Specifically, the article describes the political context in which the People’s Olympiad was conceived, underling its organisational peculiarities, and the events that led to the participation of some foreign athletes in the battle of Barcelona and the early stages of the conflict.
