This issue explores the relationship between cities and housing policy through a close examination of the implementation of Law No. 167 of 18 April 1962, whose historical significance makes it a valuable lens through which to investigate the urban history of contemporary Italy. The articles collected here illustrate the various ways in which Law No. 167, concerning the acquisition of land for affordable and social housing, was implemented in Italian cities from the 1960s onwards. The neighbourhoods built on land acquired under this law constitute a substantial part of Italy’s late twentiethcentury residential landscape and, in recent years, have frequently been identified as potential sites for physical and social regeneration strategies.
