This article reconstructs the origins of popular schooling between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the Catholic regions of Europe, highlighting its structural connection with the secularization of the State and the crisis of Jesuit educational hegemony following the expulsions of the second half of the eighteenth century. Through an analysis of the Lombard and Neapolitan experiences, and in particular of the pedagogical missions to Rovereto undertaken by Francesco Soave, Alessandro Gentile, and Ludovico Vuoli, the essay shows how the so-called “normal method” developed within the broader framework of state-building and the need to form disciplined and linguistically uniform subjects. Popular literacy is therefore interpreted not merely as a pedagogical advance, but as a political instrument for the reorganization of the lower classes, the transformation of traditional forms of obedience, and the gradual separation of individuals from their original linguistic and cultural environment. Particular attention is devoted to linguistic education, the struggle against dialects, and the role of schooling in the construction of a new civil and national identity.
