The Venice access fee offers a particularly revealing case through which to explore the tensions between the exploitation of the informational value of data in administrative digitalisation and personal data protection. Taking the decision of the Italian Data Protection Authority of 4 August 2025, no. 468 as its starting point, the article focuses on the critical issues surrounding purpose specification, the legal basis of processing, and compliance with the necessity clause, proportionality, and data minimisation. The Venice case thus serves as a useful framework for broader reflections on the relationship between administrative efficiency and the limits set by the GDPR.
