This article describes the churches where, according to oral and written tradition, the first tomb and sarcophagus of Saint Agatha are located, as well as those built on the sites of her martyrdom and others connected to the feast of the Saint or where her relics are kept. It describes, in particular, the church of Maria SS. Annunziata, annexed to the Carmelite convent, which, within the cloister, houses the Romanera funerary monument believed by the people of Catania to be the first tomb of the Saint; the churches built over Romanera tombs outside the city walls of Catania; the church of Sant’Agata la Vetere, annexed to the convent of the same name, which houses the marble sarcophagus where, again according to tradition, the body of the Saint was placed; the churches of Sant’Agata al Carcere and Sant’Agata alla Fornace, or San Biagio; The monastery of San Placido, where the Saint’s alleged home is located; the church of Sant’Agata alle Sciare; and the cathedral of Sant’Agata.
