The paper examines how the concept of somatic matrix is used by author Annita Gallina as a conceptual catalyst for all her other reflections on memory, trauma, and primary repression. The analyst’s ability to wait in order to explore and create, together with the patient, the shared matrix of Self and Other is one of the distinctive aspects of this analysis. Mario Bertolini’s contributions in his work “Notes on Memory” illuminate the exploration of the void states of prenatal life, when primitive memory often consists solely of the repetition of basic sensory states. Analysis, in this sense, can be considered in the light of a “necessary re-traumatization, this time not catastrophic.
