The author sets out to trace echoes of Napoleon’s legacy in the production of Carlo Cattaneo, examining his writings and letters. The aim of the essay is to understand what image of Bonaparte and the Napoleonic age emerges from a survey of his written records, what sort of legacy Cattaneo intended to highlight, but also what sort of relationships Cattaneo had with such a fascinating figure. The essay focuses attention on certain chronological junctures in which Napoleon’s appeal on Cattaneo was particularly intense: these were the twoyears revolutionary period (‘48‘49) and the end of the 1850s, when internal French events and then the politicalmilitary alliance between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Second Empire led Cattaneo to a revisitation of “Bonapartism” capable of legitimising Napoleon III’s policy towards the Italian situation. It is in this context that the main Napoleonic legacy in Cattaneo’s eyes comes to the surface: the army and the flag.
