The historical and institutional evolution of psychoanalytic training is retraced, discussing the transition from the intimate and unregulated spontaneity of Freud’s office at his home to the rigid bureaucratization imposed by the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) and the Berlin Institute. In particular, the authoritarian tendencies of training analysis are described, highlighting how candidates’ submission to the judgment of training analysts pollutes the transference and fuels unresolved Oedipal dynamics that subsequently translate into rivalries, power struggles, and fratricidal wars within the psychoanalytic community. Finally, contemporary critiques of this monolithic system are examined, advocating the abolition of the status of training analysts in favor of authentic personal analysis.
