In the last ten years numerous studies have highlighted the relationship of agriculture to the environment, together with other sectors of the economy and of society. This relationship have attributed a diverse and broader role to agriculture from that which was previously its traditional position. In particular, its multifunctionality is an indication of the capacity of agriculture to respond to changing societal and consumer needs/requirements. In this present work, after having identified the characteristics and the defining aspects of social agriculture, particular attention is paid to the rehabilitative role of agricultural work for inmates in detention or serving prison sentences, identifying it as a useful experience to improve the quality of life and to promote future social and labour integration. The paper presents the case study of the 153 Social Cooperative, which has created a social society for the management and evaluation of the agricultural activity of the district prison in Capanne.
