Mauro Moretti reviews the edition of the correspondence between Pasquale Villari (1827-1917), one of the most important historians and political writers of united Italy, and German historians and scholars (including Theodor Mommsen, Paul Kehr and Otto Hartwig). The volume is an important source for the study of Italian- German intellectual relations and of the links between historiography, politics and moral values in the culture of the period. Of particular interest are the judgments on Bismarck’s achievements, the spiritual crisis of the fin de siècle, and the practices of historiographical collaboration.
