Biodiversity Education

A world-based and experiential approach

This volume explores biodiversity education as a key dimension of contemporary responses to environmental and social transformations. It draws on interdisciplinary collaboration between the pedagogical and biological sciences and is grounded in the recognition of biodiversity as essential to ecosystem functioning, climate resilience, and more-than-human flourishing, as well as in the growing need to develop educational perspectives and practices capable of fostering awareness, engagement, and responsible relationships with the living world.

This volume explores biodiversity education as a key dimension of contemporary responses to environmental and social transformations. It stems from the work of the BEAT—Biodiversity Education and Awareness Team research group, working on behalf of the NBFC—National Biodiversity Future Center on initiatives in biodiversity education and training. It draws on interdisciplinary collaboration between the pedagogical and biological sciences and is grounded in the recognition of biodiversity as essential to ecosystem functioning, climate resilience, and more-than-human flourishing, as well as in the growing need to develop
educational perspectives and practices capable of fostering awareness, engagement, and responsible relationships with the living world.
The aim is to present the conceptual framework within which an approach— in many respects unprecedented—to education for and about biodiversity is situated, exploring its theoretical foundations and methodological considerations in depth. By focusing on potential topics of interest or categories useful for orienting perspectives, the contributions discuss theoretical assumptions for addressing biodiversity from a pedagogical standpoint, insights into the animal and plant worlds, and methodological aspects useful for designing educational settings.
