EITO (European Information Technology Observatory) nasce nel 1993 da un'idea di Smau e da allora è diventato uno strumento sempre più conosciuto e diffuso, non solo in Europa, ma in tutto il mondo. Uno strumento per chi lavora in questo settore, sempre più un punto di riferimento per quanti vogliono conoscere i nuovi sviluppi dell'economia digitale. Smau contribuisce a definire anno dopo anno i temi più rilevanti per il mercato ICT europeo e quelli che hanno un interesse specifico per il contesto italiano.

Il Rapporto EITO viene realizzato ogni anno con il contributo delle più importanti fiere europee del settore, Smau, Cebit e Simo, di Eicta (European Information and Communication Technology Industry Association) e con il prezioso supporto della Commissione Europea. Dall'anno 2000 l'Unione Europea ha formalizzato EITO come gruppo europeo di interesse economico.

Nel 2002 EITO presenta la sua decima edizione, confermando una volta di più il suo ruolo fondamentale nel monitoraggio dei più importanti fattori tecnologici che influenzano il mondo e il mercato dell'Information & Communication Technology.
