The U.S. economic crisis of 2008-2009 hit the automotive industry particularly hard; sales fell suddenly by 40% in the third quarter of 2008. The U.S. policy response to this automotive crisis was somewhat misdirected, attempting to solve the wrong problems. The U.S. automakers did not have a cost problem. Instead, they faced a price problem: consumers were willing to buy vehicles from the Detroit Three only if they were priced at least two thousand dollars less than their competition. The paper argues that the cause of this price problem was a failure over decades to adapt to new competitive methods introduced by Japanese automakers, methods which made untenable the traditionally hostile relationship the automakers had with their workforce and suppliers. Though the policies adopted by the U.S. government had their flaws, they may still be effective in returning profitability to U.S.-owned automakers, albeit in the context of a smaller and lower-paid industry.
The impact of emerging technologies has broadened the horizons of study to provide answers and potential solutions to the difficulties and dilemmas concerning the workers’ contribution in relation to the effective use of these tools. The achievement of these objectives, from the theoretical reflection and from the practical initiatives, is feasible through an opening towards a dis-continuity connected to a regenerated and desired “new humanism”, capable of making us reflect on renewed organizational and conceptual orientations. Rethinking workers’ position in the relationship with technology is relevant precisely because it allows us to redefine their roles within organizations. In response to the dangers of automation, in this context, individuals will be responsible for providing interpretations characterizing adequate information power. This represents a significant challenge within public administration. Starting from a theoretical approach that combines the theoretical assumptions derived from personalism and Chomsky’s generative grammar, the contribution intends to investigate how the use of big data in reporting can promote readability and transparency of public information, mediated and implemented by human judgment. This approach, in redefining the roles of people in current work contexts, provides a humanistic framework of analysis in management, contrary to some predictive literary interpretations.
Women with bleeding disorders have rarely been studied. Recently, thanks to the advancement in treatment options and the recognition that women can also suffer from haemo-philia, new research lines have been developed. This study investigated the experiences of women affected by bleeding disorders (patients, healthy or symptomatic carriers), specifically focussing on disease diagnosis and management in daily life, relational issues, and reproductive options. Age, family history, educational qualification and religiosity were also considered. Thirty-two women were interviewed, and their narratives were analysed with lexical-metric and qualitative content analysis. The results showed some key themes, which refer to cognitive, affective and behavioural responses to the disease. They included both sex-neutral and female-specific contents, offering a new reading of the phenomenon. Although the aware-ness of female bleeding disorders has increased in recent years, sick women stressed late di-agnosis paths and symptom underestimations, while female carriers discussed psychosexual issues and motherhood choices, with related implications on physical and psychological well-being, and relational life. Alongside commonalities, some differences emerged depending on women’s socio-cultural situations. Overall, they suggested the importance of developing early patient-centred psycho-educational paths in order to tailor interventions to specific women’s needs, promote disease and self-acceptance, and enhance effective management.
This study explores career stagnation among public school teachers in the Philippines, focusing on those who have remained in Teacher I positions for over a decade. Despite structured promotion pathways by the Department of Educa-tion (DepEd), many teachers struggle to advance. Using a case study approach, data were collected through surveys with 124 purposively selected teachers and a focus group discussion with seven participants. A respondent profile and a brief Swot analysis of the promotion policy were presented. Findings reveal that while promotion policies, administrative support, and professional development are generally viewed as adequate, significant barriers persist. These include exces-sive documentation, unclear evaluation criteria, delays in promotion processes, lack of mentorship, perceived favoritism, limited access to scholarships and ex-ternal training, and funding constraints. Combined with personal challenges such as family obligations and the emotional toll of repeated failed attempts, these factors hinder teachers’ motivation and ability to pursue promotions, highlighting the need for targeted reforms.

Change and complementarities in the new competitive landscape: A european panel study, 1992-1996 - This paper addresses three weaknesses in the literature on new organizational forms: the limited mapping of the extent of contemporary organizational change; confusion about how contemporary changes link together; and the lack of systematic testing of the performance consequences of this kind of change. Drawing on a large-scale survey of organizational innovation in European firms, the paper finds widespread but not revolutionary change in terms of organization structure, processes, and boundaries. Using the economics notion of complementarities, the paper develops contingency and configurational approaches to suggest that organizational innovations will tend to cluster in particular ways and that the performance benefits of these innovations depend on their clustering. Complementarities in performance are explored from both inductive and deductive perspectives. Consistent with the expectations of complementarity theory, high-performing firms appeared to be innovating more and differently than low-performing firms. Again consistent with complementarities, piecemeal changes with the exception of IT were found to deliver little performance benefit, while exploitation of the full set of innovations was associated with high performance. Though few European firms were found to exploit the complementarities of new organizational practices, those that did enjoyed high-performance premia.
