The authors underline how more functional strategies for coping with intersexuality are linked to improved outcomes with regard to psychosocial well-being and, especially, satisfaction with gender identity, sexual function and social relationships. Construction of sexual identity, gender and elements that those subjects with Disorder of Sex Development (DSD) might perceive as self-dystonic, are analysed. An essential issue regarding intersexuality concerns the way in which the point of view of persons with DSD may influence the typology of treatment. A lack of narrative schemes containing the personal history of subjects in an intersexual condition prompts an emphasis on the great importance of personal perception, and the need for evaluation of intersexual conditions as an aspect of gender identity.
