This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of group motivational interviewing for alcoholdependent patients in achieving the following goals: improvement in readiness to change, self-efficacy, discrepancy and number of abstinent days at the end of the treatment. A questionnaire on Motivation to Change (MAC2-A, Spiller, Zavan and Guelfi, 2006) was administered pre and post-treatment to forty-five subjects with diagnosis of alcoholdependence with or without an anxiety disorders or illicit drug consumption. Thirty-three subjects completed the study and showed significant improvement with respect to readiness to change and self-efficacy and significant reduction in discrepancy. An increase, but not significant, in the number of patients who were abstainers was shown at the end of the treatment. Even if this study lacks a control group, results support the effectiveness of group motivational interviewing with alcohol-dependents.
