This study aimed to extend the Illness perception questionnaire-revised (IPQ-R) of Moss- Morris and colleagues, that was constructed on the basis of the model of common sense and self-regulation of Leventhal. The authors started from the idea that the experience of illness exacerbates, both in patients and in health workers who are temporarily "on the other side", the need for meaningful relationships and that this dimension - not completely comparable to the social support traditionally understood - is an important component to consider when exploring the illness representation. The aim is to make the most complete tool and assess the psychometric properties through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyzes. At the IPQ-R version validated in Italy from Giardini and colleagues, composed of 70 items that explore 3 areas (Identity, Opinions, Causes), Authors have added 14 items concerning an dimension definable Significant relationship with the other. The expanded form has been proposed to 269 health professionals (134 doctors, 135 nurses). Authors analyzed the psychometric characteristics of the amended instrument: nine new items were maintained; they are grouped in the third factor, and one item is grouped in the first factor. The Confirmatory Factorial Analysis has shown satisfactory values of fit. The results showed as the illness representation of health professionals was imbued with elements of the common sense as well as obvious references to scientific theories and contains significant references to the need for meaningful relationships with others (explored by the new item), colleagues including from which they expect authenticity and depth.
