This article analyses prayer books which were published in Italy in the 19th century, when they were «bestsellers» and the most commonly produced and owned books. Tasca’s article investigates this literature not only in relationship to popular piety and history of devotion but also for its significant social role: prayer books offer an image of pious readers and Italian society which is very interesting for the historian.
