The cult-movie Metropolis by Fritz Lang is here discussed for its relationships between architecture and psychoanalysis, addressing the web of inspirations - coming from different pictorial, architectural and philosophical schools of thought - sustaining Lang’s work. The ideal metropolis depicted in Lang’s famous scenes lives at the cross-road of expressionism, Art Nouveau, modernism and De Stijl, as a spatial icon suspended between phallic verticalism and dark underground, and as a contradiction between dominating and subaltern classes. This imaginary place of alienation is here discussed as an example of how Marxism has been elaborated by psychoanalysis through art and architecture, refreshing a long term tradition of studies developed around the movie.
