From the second half of the 1960s onwards, the historical social science (Historische Sozialwissenschaft) begins to assert itself within German historiography. Resting upon unpublished sources, this paper analyzes the scientific and intellectual influence that Hans Rosenberg exercised over Hans-Ulrich Wehler. It tracks the internal conflicts within the historiographical field as much as the process of emancipation by Wehler and other exponents of his generations from those historians who are usually understood to be part of the pantheon of the German social history because of their institutional standing, first and foremost Theodor Schieder and Werner Conze.
