Antonio Scurati’s M. Il figlio del secolo is a biography of Mussolini in narrative form, which includes the rapid rise of Fascism from its creation on 23 March 1919 to the proclamation of the dictatorship on 3 January 1925. Although it has been presented by its publisher and many reviewers as a novel, it is in reality a scrupulously researched work of history which succeeds in drawing in the reader in such a way that they participate in events as though they were experiencing them, and without knowing what will happen next. Mussolini’s political cynicism, the violence of squadrism, the weakness of the opposition and the connivance of the monarchy and the State apparatus all emerge clearly from the work. Furthermore - as the author has stated - the experience of reading the book is designed to breath new life into antifascism.
