From 1945 until today: "Italia contemporanea" in the historiographical debate

This issue is a reflection on 300 issues of "Italia contemporanea": a long history, which is the result of the work of many generation of scholars over the decades. The journal was founded in 1949 with the title of "Il Movimento di liberazione in Italia. Rassegna bimestrale di studi e documenti". The initiative was promoted by a group of politicians and intellectuals gathered around Ferruccio Parri, who, a few months earlier, had created in Milan the National Institute for the Movement of Liberation in Italy. In the 1960s, the "Rassegna" became the first scholarly journal in Italy that was entirely devoted to the study of the Twentieth century, and in 1974 it took the title "Italia contemporanea". This issue retraces the history of the journal from its foundation to 2022 through a collection of articles selected by the editorial board, which have been published over the past decades. The aim of this special collection is to identify and analyse articles that can represent the historiographical trajectory of the journal and reflect how innovative they were, or still are. Moving from earlier debates on fascism, the Second World War and the Resistance, this special issue subsequently expands its scope to include contemporary developments from the Republican period. Authors of the following contributions have been, and are, distinguished collaborators and readers of the journal.
