Drawing partly on Russian and Italian archival sources, this article inves-tigates the extent as well as the reasons behind the political rapproche-ment and the relaunching of economic relations between Italy and Russia that took place at the beginning of the 20th century. In this context, Rus-sia’s participation in the 1911 celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Italian Unification was a significant event. In the wake of the Treaty on Trade and Navigation signed in 1907 and of the 1909 Racconigi Agreement, on the occasion of the 1911 celebrations of Italian Unification Russia and Italy engaged in an incisive action of cultural diplomacy, and strengthened their economic cooperation, based on the exchange of Russian raw materials and Italian manufacturing products. A cooperation that would continue in the following decades, despite the changes occurred in the two countries’ political regimes.
