This study regards the social impact assessment of a social sport initiative targeting minor and young adult offenders. The evaluation activity, which is part of the complex context of the Juvenile Justice Services characterized by re-educational purposes and by the challenges posed by new forms of devi-ance, has adopted a realist evaluation approach. The article addresses a com-plex evaluation case due to the multiplicity of stakeholders involved and the value that the evaluation outcome can give to future projects. The results indicate high stakeholder satisfaction and a positive perception of the pro-ject’s educational and social impact, confirming the pedagogical value of sport. Success is effect of a combination of contextual factors and mecha-nisms activated within the participants. The critical issues that have emerged are also discussed, as well as the implications of social sport interventions in the criminal field and for realist evaluation in complex contexts.
