The article reflects on the International Olympic Committee’s actions and contributions in organising the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Based mainly on the study of its archives, this analysis will highlight that, in organising Cortina 1956, the IOC did not merely act as guarantor but also played a guiding role. It exercised a kind of external constraint, but this did not compromise its full cooperation with Italian sport officials.
