Welfare e Ergonomia is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that provides a forum for debate and dissemination of research on welfare systems, wellbeing and social protection.
The journal stems from a collaboration between the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and Italian universities, with the aim of integrating empirical research and theoretical reflection. Founded in 2015 by Antonella Ciocia (CNR-IRPPS), it has progressively consolidated a co-editorship structure. Since 2019, the editorship has been shared with Mara Tognetti Bordogna (University of Milan – La Statale). In 2024, the scientific direction for the CNR component was assumed by Pietro Demurtas and Anna Milione (CNR-IRPPS).
The journal is published twice a year and adopts a double-blind peer review process. It is available in both print and digital formats. Its editorial structure is primarily organised around themed issues, complemented—since 2020—by an open section dedicated to original contributions engaging with ongoing scholarly debates or specific historical and social contexts.
The journal’s title reflects two closely interconnected fields of inquiry.
Welfare, in its various configurations, refers to the range of social policies aimed at safeguarding social citizenship rights and promoting social equity, within a context marked by profound transformations of social protection systems and the emergence of new forms of inequality.
Ergonomics, understood not merely as a technical-operational discipline but as a broader methodological approach, has progressively extended beyond the domain of occupational health and safety to encompass the analysis of organisational processes, participatory design, production systems and living environments, with particular attention to human wellbeing in interaction with social and material contexts.
By integrating welfare policy analysis with ergonomic approaches, the journal seeks to develop innovative interpretative frameworks for addressing contemporary social issues. It promotes multidisciplinary analyses oriented towards understanding and fostering psycho-physical and relational wellbeing, as well as identifying effective strategies aimed at enhancing social wellbeing and cohesion.
Since 2017, the journal has been recognised by the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR) as a scientific journal for Area 14 (Political and Social Sciences). Since 2018, it has been classified in Class A for the following Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors: 14/A1, 14/A2, 14/B1, 14/B2, 14/C1, 14/C2, 14/C3 and 14/D1.

Welfare e Ergonomia adopts a multi-stage evaluation procedure in accordance with international standards for scholarly journals.
All submissions are subject to a preliminary assessment by the Editors and the Editorial Board, aimed at verifying their relevance to the journal’s editorial line and their compliance with its scientific standards.
With regard to the monographic section, the selection of contributions is structured in two stages.
In the first stage, the Guest Editors of the issue, in coordination with the Editors, evaluate the abstracts submitted in response to the call for papers. Abstracts are assessed on the basis of their coherence with the theme of the issue, their scholarly relevance and the overall quality of the proposal.
Authors of accepted abstracts are invited to submit the full manuscript and to upload it in anonymised form on the publisher’s OJS platform.
In the second stage, contributions that have passed the preliminary evaluation are subject to double-blind peer review. Each article is sent in anonymous form to at least two external reviewers. Reviewers provide their evaluations anonymously, substantiating their assessments and, where appropriate, formulating requests for revision. In the case of conflicting reviews, the Editors may request a third review.
With regard to the open section, contributions are subject to the same preliminary assessment and the same double-blind peer review process. Once accepted, articles are published according to the order of submission on the OJS platform.
Review reports are communicated to authors in all cases, including where the outcome is negative.
